I keep the base ...
I keep the base station in my kitchen and use the speakers often on my patio which is probably 15-20 feet away. The biggest problem I run into is that my patio sits below the grade of my house so when people go in and out of the door it will often hiccup. I have had no problems when I put the speakers up on a shelf. Let me know if you have additional questions.
