We purchased surround sound with dvd player but the surround sound will not work on the tv?

By admin · Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

It only works when you are watching a dvd and there is no tv/dvd button to switch from dvd to tv for the surround sound to work…is there an attachment or something else needed?

Well how do you connect your DVD player?

If its a combo DVD player and audio receiver, most likely you bought a cheapo HTiB. (Home theater in a Box)

Most HTiB are pretty poor quality, and do not include any digital audio inputs or video inputs. You want a separate audio receiver that has either HDMI input, optical audio input, or digital coaxial input. Those are the only three connections that support digital surround sound.

Make sure your cable or satellite box is connected to the surround sound and from the surround sound to the tv.

You don’t give enough info. First off do you use cable or statellite. Second do you have a box with a fiberoptic output for cable or satellite. Third does your tv have a fiber optic output. If none of these are true then it is impossible to get true surround sound. However you can use the old rca’s and set the surround sound system to fake it. All these are important to know so please answer those questions before we can really help you.

Why do you think you could?

These so-called systems with a DVD player built into a skinny box that acts as a receiver are NOT really expandable. The lack of the ability to connect other things is one of the things you gave up when you went for the low-price.

Check the manual carefully and to see if there is an extra input on the surround sound system. This should be either optic or coax. The digital sound output from your TV or cable/satellite box should connect there. However, from your question, it appears that there is no way to select another input for the surround system (i.e. it is dedicated to the DVD player). In that case, you cannot use that system with the TV.
