how to hookup a surround sound dvd player to your television?
sony five disk dvd player with surround sound
You need a Home Theater system to act as the Surround Sound decoder. If you have this, connect the digital audio output of the DVD player to the Home Theater, and connect the video of the DVD player to your TV. Depending on the TV and DVD player, you’ll have several options for connecting video. The choices are, in order of video quality:
HDMI (only available on HDTVs) — BEST
COMPONENT video (three cables, marked Y/Pr/Pb)
S-video (a circular, 5 pronged connector)
COMPOSITE video (a single RCA jack, usually yellow)
RF (a regular coax cable) — WORST
Choose the best connection that you have available.
If you DON’T have a home theater, you’ll need to connect the audio directly to the TV. There should be a pair of analog audio outputs (marked L/R and colored Red and White). These connect directly to your TV. Using this set up, you will NOT have surround sound (you really need the Home Theater with the 6 or 8 speakers to achieve this).

What model DVD player?
What model TV?
Do you have an existing receiver, or does this DVD do the surround sound processing?

I am assuming that you have a A/V receiver also in your setup. I recommend getting the audio outputs from your DVD player and connect directly to your A/V receiver. Coaxial, or fiber optic cables can be used for audio.
Take your video output and connect directly to your TV. Component video cables are really good in terms of picture. Blue jeans cable, and Monster cable comes to mind in terms of popular brands.
