DVD Player / Surround Sound?!?!?!?
I want to buy my boyfriend a DVD player, but he wants one that has space to connect a surround sound system to it.
What does the DVD player (in terms of connections) need to have to make sure it will work with his existing surround sound?
Cheers x
The majority of DVD players (not including mobile or portable players) will have at least 1 of 3 available Digital Audio Output jacks:
1) Optical Digital output
2) Coaxial Digital output
3) HDMI output
With this info in hand, ask your boyfriend to confirm which of these correspond to his ’surround sound system’. Or better yet, why not just take him shopping and let him do the legwork to figure out the ‘right’ DVD player..

Optical digital is the most common, almost all DVD players are fitted with that. If his surround system only has one optical input that is in use, there are optical switch boxes you can buy cheaply which will expand the single input to 3.
It all really depends on what inputs his existing surround system has. There are, for example converters which will convert digital optical to digital coax if he has no optical inputs on the surround. Either optical or coax will carry 6 channels of 5.1 audio down a single cable.
Optical is the best bet though, with HDMI in second place for being common. Bear in mind though that HDMI is not a standard and some equipment manufacturers do not consider audio when designing the HDMI circuits.
